It represents a dramatic human cost, and a major financial cost. However, it has been clearly demonstrated in all those areas that neither experience, nor expertise can avoid you doing mistakes… it’s actually the contrary.
Indeed, whatever the task to accomplish or the profession, every single human being naturally does 2 to 10 mistakes per hour. If the situation also becomes urgent, stressful or complex, time and cognitive resources are limited. MAX has been thought and designed upon a need during interventions by Jean-Christophe CEJKA, Anesthesiologist and Resuscitator in University Hospital Center, and graduated engineer from École centrale des arts et manufactures. During his daily experience, he came to the conclusion that medical care are far from being perfect, especially in at-risk specialties such as anaesthesia, resuscitation, emergency medicine or obstetrics. The fact is that in crisis period, the person leading an urgent or complex situation loses an important part of its cognitive abilities because of stress. Jean-Christophe CEJKA is as well a medical simulation trainer since 2013 and manages the activity and a part of the academic education and research of the Centre Lyonnais d’Enseignement par la Simulation en Santé (CLESS, Lyon). He also provides «combat rescue» trainings for French task forces, within de framework of his doctor activity. These experiences in professional simulation exercises confirm on a daily basis that the care could be highly improved. Thanks to these observations, his experience, and the feedbacks of many collaborations with health, aeronautics and military professionals, Jean-Christophe CEJKA wanted to design the best possible solution to answer those « cognitive biases » in professional context. So has he developed, in partnership with Université Claude Bernard-Lyon 1, a digital and ergonomic « cognitive help » intended for professionals, in the form of an application on Smartphone/Tablet. Named MAX (for Medical Assistant eXpert), it is an authentic co-pilot bringing reinsurance and informations to the leader dealing with the crisis context, strengthening the human performances, as well as making the communication more efficient. This way, the leader can focus its cognitive abilities on the management of the environment and the team, drastically reducing the mistakes and accidents committed during intervention.
